Anglo-Saxon coin talisman, Sterling silver Norse design amulet pendant with a rare, historically important, coin from the era of the Saxon-Viking conflict.
This solid silver pendant features a genuine Anglo-Saxon coin, known as a ‘Kings of Northumbria Styca’, that was issued in the 840s or 850s AD, around the same time that king Alfred the Great was born and the Vikings were mercilessly raiding the coast of England.
The coin was struck with the name +EDIΓRED REX (King Aethelred II) during a particularly anarchic period in the Northumbrian dark ages, when two warlord-kings named Aethelred II and Rædwulf (Redwolf) were fighting for the throne.
Very little is known about Rædwulf or his origin, and only a small amount has been discovered about Aethelred’s reign, other than it was probably marred by almost constant conflict and that he was eventually either assassinated or killed fighting against the Vikings.
Although we will never really know who’s hands this coin passed through, or what it was used to buy, it is still a tangible, physical link to those long-ago days that must have seen some of the most exhilarating, if not terrifying, moments in British history!
The coin has been set into a silver pendant, as if it were a precious gem. The mount itself was initially hand carved before having a mould taken from it and being cast in solid silver. The pendant is illustrated with a Celtic zoomorphic running dogs design, reminiscent of illuminated manuscript designs from the Viking era.
The finished talisman has been decorated with a blood red patina. It measures 3.2cm, which is a little under one and one third inches in diameter. It is supplied on a sturdy chain and has been given a hallmark to prove it is solid sterling silver
This pendant is supplied in its own gift box.
